The Canton JV girls basketball team squeaked by St. Lawrence Central on Friday night in the first round of the Don Petty Memorial Christmas Tournament.
The junior Bears once again started out slow in the first half and trailed 23-15 going into the break. The Bears Cubs trailed the entire game until the 53 second mark when sophomore Amelia Rodee went to the foul line with Canton down by a point. She calmly sank them both and sealed a 40-39 victory.
“She will remember that moment for the rest of her life, that’s one you dream about in your backyard. We got a few breaks tonight and Mattie Porter had a breakout game playing her best game of the season at both ends of the court. Lindsey Filiatrault may have had the play of the game late in the fourth stealing the ball and taking it in for a lay up that made it a one point game,” said Coach Mike Wentworth.
Canton was led in scoring by Ava Hoy who had 22 points 15 rebounds and eight blocks. Rounding out the scoring on the night was Amelia Rodee eight points, 10 rebounds, Mattie Porter seven points, five rebounds, Lindsey Filiatrault two points, and Allysa Jacob one point.
