The Canton girl’s modified basketball team closed out the first part of their season undefeated. The 7th and 8th grade teams, under first-year head coach Stevissa Nellenback, are both 3-0 heading into the holiday break. Both teams beat Malone at home, and then topped Gouverneur and Salmon River on the road.
The 7th grade team beat Malone 7-5. Gracen Parker led the Bears with four points. Sara Aldous added two points, and Cecily Shipman went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to round out the scoring.
Canton edged Gouverneur 14-12 as Vivian Coburn and Winnie Downs each notched five points. Haley Burnett had two points, and Parker and Aldous contributed one point apiece.
The Bears made it three in a row with a convincing 19-6 win over Salmon River. Coburn led the way with eight points. Aldous dropped in five points, and Downs, Burnett, and Shipman each chipped in with two points apiece.
The 8th grade squad opened with a solid scrimmage against Madrid-Waddington, where the Bears won all four quarters. That play led to a 33-13 win over Malone to open the season. Josie Gabriel dropped in 14 points to lead Canton. Katie Metcalf added 10 points. Stella Shipman had five points, and Laurel Whittier and Ava Ames had two points each.
The Bears then clipped Gouverneur 34-29 behind seven points apiece from Gabriel and Whittier. Metcalf and Kyleigh Gollinger each scored six points. Ames and Shipman chipped in with four points apiece.
The Bears stayed unbeaten with a 28-10 road win over Salmon River. Gabriel stuffed the stat sheet as she snagged 15 rebounds to go along with seven points, five assists and five steals. Whittier added nine points, three rebounds and three steals. Ames had six points, five steals and four rebounds. Shipman pumped in four points and had four rebounds and four steals. Gollinger had a solid defensive game with three steals and two rebounds. Metcalf had two points, two rebounds, and two steals, and Maysa Moumen contributed a steal and a rebound.
The Bears will next play Potsdam Central at home on Monday, January 6. The 7th graders will tip off at 4:30 p.m. and the 8th graders right after that game.
