The Girls’ Varsity hockey team started the season with a loss to reigning Section X champions Salmon River.
Despite the score, the Canton girls played a strong game and held their own against an experienced team of upperclassmen. Canton gave up two quick goals within the first few minutes of the game.
“The girls were a little intimidated and nervous, I knew it would take some time for the younger players and new players to adjust to the varsity level,” said Head Coach Anita Francis.
The team settled in and Eva Murphy scored her first varsity goal with an assist from Emily Estabrooks at the 9:42 mark of the first period.
Eighth grader Mackenzie Wiggins stopped 17 shots and Sara Rodee stopped 13 in the net for the Bears.
Murphy’s goal was the only goal for the Bears in their 7-1 loss to the Shamrocks. The team is determined to move forward and prepare themselves for their second league game, where they will face Massena Monday afternoon at 5:15 at the Canton Pavilion.
