In their home opener the Canton girls’ varsity basketball team beat Massena 58-46. Gretchen Warner won the opening tip-off and the team was off and running. With many fast break points and points off turnovers, the Bears scored 30 points in the first half. They also held the Red Raiders to only 10 points in the first half with aggressive defense. Canton used their speed to put up a strong front on defense, causing multiple turnovers and deflections. Going into the half Canton was pleased with their defensive performance and hoped to continue it throughout the game.

The second half was a different story, Massena came out of the half playing tenacious defense and scoring on many of Canton’s turnovers. The Raiders went on an 11-0 scoring run to debunk Canton’s defense. Both teams have tremendous speed however, Massena beat Canton down the floor many times in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter held back-and-forth scoring for the opponents, and ultimately Canton allowed Massena to score more points than they had hoped. Canton looks to continue to break the press with fast ball movement and strong ball handling, which they were successful in on Thursday. The team also hopes to execute plays better in the future and hold up their defensive mindset throughout the game. Senior Guards, Katie Chisholm and Sarah Sieminksi led the team in scoring with 23 and 13 points respectively. Sophomore Maddie Hoy also scored 11 points and collected many rebounds with her height and strength in the paint.

The team plays again Thursday at home against Malone at 7 p.m. Go Bears!
