New Faces for Girls JV Basketball

The Golden Bears Girls JV Basketball team has gone 38-1 over the last two seasons but this is a new year and a new group of players that are looking to carry on the tradition of girls’ basketball at Canton.

Moving up to the varsity from last year’s undefeated team will be sophomore Maddie Hoy along with juniors Hailee “Red” Duvall and Hannah Reed.  Brooke Larrabee, MaKayla Douglas, Bree Rogers and Grace O’Neill have also moved on which will make this year’s JV squad very young and inexperienced.

Returning from the 2019 team will be Mattie Porter, Camryn Sipher, Amelia Rodee, and Alyssa Jacob.  Porter, Sipher and Rodee were all big contributors from last year’s team and will be depended on a great deal on the court and for leadership with the young Bears team.

“Camryn was a starter and Mattie and Amelia were usually the first two off the bench so we are looking for a big year from all three girls,” Coach Mike Wentworth noted.

Newcomers to this year’s team are 6’2”eighth grader Ava Hoy and a freshman class that includes; Hadley Alguire, Lindsey Filiatrault, Courtney Peters, Phoebe Jaskowski, Wyatt Newman, Kayla Larrabee and Olivia Sero.

“This is a good group of newcomers with a lot of potential,” Wentworth said. “They have all taken big strides in early scrimmages so we will have to see how hard they are willing to work to take the next step in their basketball careers.”

Hadley Alguire is nursing a back injury and is out until mid January.  When she gets back it will add much needed depth to the front line. Until then Mattie Porter may get her wish and have to play down low and mix it up under the boards.

The Bears will be in action on Thursday December 5 at home against Massena.
