The Canton girl’s modified volleyball team cruised to their fifth straight win Tuesday night as they swept Potsdam 3-0.  The Bears beat the Sandstoners 25-8, 25-10, and 25-22.

In the first set, Katie Metcalf staked Canton to a 4-0 lead with four straight serves and three aces.  Laurel Whittier then stretched a 6-1 lead to 9-1 with three consecutive serves and two aces.  More strong serving from Autumn Bronson pushed Canton’s lead to 17-4.  The Bears closed the first set with an 8-4 run, including a pair of kills from Whittier.

In the second set, Josie Gabriel delivered four aces on five straight serves as the Bears opened a 6-1 lead.  Lily Borrelli notched an ace a short time later and Canton went up 10-3.  The Bears continued to demonstrate strong serving as Kyleigh Gollinger took over and nailed six aces on 10 serves in a row.  Canton held set point, and two great digs from Gabriel and Zoey Mattice gave the Bears the win.

The final frame went back and forth as neither team was able to build more than a one-point lead through the first 10 points of the set.  The Bears were up 15-12 after a good pass from Alexa Romano led to a point.  Vanessa Mousaw then served four straight times with one ace as the lead improved to 19-12.  Canton eventually took a 22-17 lead following strong play from Borrelli, Romano, Mousaw, Paige Blackmer, Cecily Shipman, and Maura Onyper.  Potsdam clawed back to trim Canton’s lead to 23-22.  But the Bears kept battling and scored the last two points of the match to capture the win.

The Bears wrap up their season this Thursday, October 24 hosting Gouverneur at 4 p.m.
