To win the match, a beautiful pass and set led to a kill by Meredith “MJ” Jones on Thursday night. The Canton Bears varsity volleyball team beat the Yellowjackets in three sets, 25-11, 25-9, 25-19. The game was won due to the Bears consistent and energetic play. Thursday was the first match, in the last few, the team has felt pleased with their level of play and hope to build off this success going into the final week of regular season play.
All members of the team contributed to the win. Defensive specialist Grace Franklin led the team with some exceptional serving, which has been a struggle throughout this season. Libero, Rorie Newman, has continually kept a loud and positive attitude while working hard in practices. This earned her a starting position against Madrid-Waddington, where she took this opportunity to show her great passing skills and guide the hitters with her loud voice. Six different players on Canton scored at least one kill and hitters Gretchen Warner and Sydney Lorenc scored nine and eight kills respectively.
Other strong contributors to the team win included hitter Jillian DiSalvo with four kills, D.S. Grace Franklin with five aces and 20 total points served, and setter Kelsea Whittier with 21 assists. The Golden Bears will finish their season with two home matches. On Tuesday, they will face their Route 11 rival Potsdam at 6 p.m. and Thursday night the team will honor nine seniors in a matchup with Gouverneur at 6 p.m. Please come cheer on the team as they close out their regular season. Go Bears!
