In five sets, Varsity Volleyball beat Chateaugay on Monday night. 25-20,25-21,21-25,24-26,25-18 were the scores as Canton came out hot in the first two sets. As the match continued the Bears’ energy and strength wavered. The team was sporting their new pink jerseys in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month and the pink brought the team some extra strength to pull through in the fifth set.
The match was a turning point for the team however. It was the first five-set match Canton was able to stick through and win. This statistic shows the Bears are building endurance to play strong into five sets, and it proves the team is building mental toughness. To start the fifth set Canton began with a deficit of 9-3 and slowly the Bears came back and pulled ahead. Mattigan Porter had a handful of consecutive serves to finish the game, as serving was a weakness for the team throughout the game. Despite serving struggles, Canton was successful on offense with many strong kills and tips. As a team, the Bears tallied 49 kills and six blocks.
The offensive powerhouses of Gretchen Warner and Sydney Lorenc had 19 and 18 kills respectively. Middle hitters, Jillian DiSalvo and Katie Bennett both added five kills, and setter Kelsea Whittier had 29 assists with four aces.
Thursday the team will travel to Ogdensburg to face the Blue Devils. Canton looks to get revenge on their early season loss to OFA. Come support Volleyball at 5 p.m. in Ogdensburg and catch them in their lucky pink jerseys. Go Bears!
