The Canton girl’s modified volleyball team used strong serving on Tuesday as the Bears swept Ogdensburg Free Academy 3-0 in straight sets.
In the opening set, Katie Metcalf served five straight aces staking the Bears to a 9-4 lead. Autumn Bronson then served for 13 straight points and Canton won the first set 25-7.
In the second set, Kyleigh Gollinger notched three aces and Emma Logan had five as the Bears jumped out to a 17-6 lead. Service aces from Paige Blackmer, Cecily Shipman, and Laurel Whittier gave Canton a 25-11 win in the second set.
In the final set, Lilly Borrelli recorded three aces as Canton built a 10-4 lead. Alexa Romano added another ace and the Bears went up 12-6. OFA scored three straight and pulled within three points, 12-9. Vanessa Mousaw stopped the run scoring a point with a good pass over the net, and then Shipman served five times for points pushing the Bears’ lead to 17-9. Aces from Maura Onyper and Mousaw gave Canton a 20-10 lead. OFA kept the set close with an 8-4 run to close the gap to 24-18. Shipman then delivered a service point to give the Bears the 25-18 win and the sweep.
The Bears return to their home court on Wednesday, Sept. 18 hosting Clifton-Fine Central School at 5 p.m.
