Today the Canton Bears Boys JV soccer team outlasted Malone in overtime by a score of 1-0.
The Bears got off to a sluggish start in the first half as they wasted many opportunities in a well played first half by Franklin Academy. Things looked up for Canton in the second half when they seemed to shake off their bus legs from the long ride to Malone.
Offensive opportunities increased for the Bears as they started to spread the field and move the ball with short, quick passes. Despite pelting the Malone defense with opportunity after opportunity in the second half, the Canton strikes were off target, seeming to shoot everywhere there was not a net. With regulation drawing to a close, both teams felt the pressure to score but time ran out with the score tied up at zero.
Extending the game to OT meant extending the style of play, with quick, back-and-forth, end-to-end soccer. The end-to-end play came to an end when Bradley Frank led Josh Aldous with a through pass and Aldous took a shot from just above the eighteen yard box which soared above the goalkeeper’s head to win the game for the Bears. Goalkeepers Drew Johnson and Cade Cheezam, along with Sweeper Jack Filiatrault, played well in the defensive battle for the Bears in the win.
The 4-1 Bears will be in action again on Friday at home against rival Madrid-Waddington. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
