Hello Golden Bear fans, and welcome to Plaindealer Sports! My name is Jake Newman, and I am the founder and editor of your new high school sports blog.

When I got the call from my former boss and good friend Paul Mitchell telling me that the St. Lawrence Plaindealer was being discontinued, I was dismayed. I loved working at the Plaindealer and hated to see it go for that, but I also knew we were losing the best source of information for our community.

Specifically, I was upset to be losing all of the local sports coverage the Plaindealer offered our high school athletes. Last hockey season, our boys hockey team made sure to submit a weekly recap to the paper for our fans to read, and we got an overwhelmingly positive response from those who followed along.

I decided recently that we couldn’t lose touch with our high school athletes, and I bought this blog site. This blog will offer to each sports team at Canton High School – modified through varsity – the opportunity to post about their teams.

We built this page in honor of (but not affiliation with) the former St. Lawrence Plaindealer and its rich, 163-year history in Canton. With that said, we are going to do things a bit differently with our new blog. The plan is to have someone from each team write recaps for their games and other season highlights throughout the year so that our followers get up-to-date information from the teams themselves.

I would be remiss if I didn’t extend a heartfelt thank you to Paul Mitchell, who worked tirelessly to ensure the Canton community was always up to date on its sports news each Tuesday. Paul was happy to include any recaps and photos we had to send to him, and it was something everyone in Canton looked forward to each week. Be on the lookout for Paul’s name on this blog sometime soon.

While I’m the one who started this blog and plan to have students write for it, we could certainly use some help from our parents or other community members as well! If you have made a hobby of taking photos at sporting events, want to help write or edit content for a sports team, or think you can contribute in any other way, please do not hesitate to reach out to us! This is a blog that will serve the community, and it will need to be produced by the community as well.

Our hope is to create a platform that is easy to navigate, constantly updated and truly celebrates the athletes that continue to carry on the Golden Bear tradition. We hope you’ll follow along and enjoy the content we produce, and we can’t wait to see you out there cheering on the Bears this year!
